It is NOT your fault. You are NOT alone. THERE IS HOPE.
If you or someone you know has been the victim of domestic violence and abuse, rape and sexual assault or stalking it is important to remember that you are not alone.
According to recent statistics:
One in 4 women and one in 12 men have been victims of domestic violence and abuse.
One in 6 women and one in 33 men have been sexually assaulted.
6 million women and men in the United States are victims of stalking each year.
Remember, no matter what, you are not to blame and there is hope. No one deserves to live with emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. You have choices:
Tell a Trusted Friend or Family Member
Silence and isolation reinforces abusive behavior, allowing the abuse to continue to thrive. Speaking out might seem like a very risky and scary thing to do but by keeping quiet you are putting yourself in much greater danger. Telling someone about your situation may be difficult, but taking positive action to end the abuse is easier with support.
Make a Safety Plan and an Escape Plan
Preparation includes planning where to go, what to do and being aware of your surroundings in case of a violent incident.
File for an Order of Protection
Although the protection offered by a protective order has limits, breaking any part of this order can mean jail time for the abuser. Serious consequences for the abuser can result in greater safety for you.
Seek Counseling
Counseling can help you raise your sense of self-worth, empower you to make healthy choices about your life, and realize that you are not to blame for what happened.
Seek Shelter
If you are in fear for your physical safety, go to the home of a friend, relative, neighbor, or to a shelter for victims of intimate partner abuse.
